This session discussed treatment lapses using a hopeful, patient-centered approach The presenter addressed: that opioid use disorder is a chronic and treatable disease; genetic, environmental, and physical parts of opioid use disorder risk/protection; emphasizes that return to use (relapse) is a normal and expected event and provides a learning opportunity; warning signs of potential return to use; strategies for addressing return to use; reducing shame and stigma; and identifying when and how to adjust treatment.

Three learning objectives:

  1. Understand opioid use disorder as a chronic disease,
  2. Identify risk factors for recurrence of use,
  3. Identify why and how to discuss recurrence of use with patients.
